Don’t know if this was already stated, but outside the stadium (say baseball) where the players enter. Little more tricky with the guards, but I’ve scored big with this (Pudge Rodriguez, Varitek, Youkilis, Heath Bell, and more).

  2. Brandon Bish says:

I graph baseball mostly and am starting to get into doing basketball as well. I was wondering what time NBA players usually leave the hotel for a 7 PM game? I’m graphing the Lakers in a couple weeks and am really hoping to score my favorite all time athlete’s autograph, Kobe Bryant. Dwight, Pau, Nash, and the rest of the team would be real nice as well! haha

  3. Ryan says:

Have you ever had any team or player get mad that you were waiting outside of their practice arena?

    • Matt Raymond says:

I’ve never graphed a practice arena as they tend to cross the line into private property and they aren’t convenient for me in this area. Anyone else with experiences to share?

    • Maggie says:

I’ve graphed the Carolina Panthers before/after practice- they have a practice field a short walk from the stadium where they walk up a public sidewalk and have to go by you. The responses vary with each player and even each security guard. One of the security guards is friendly to us and will even give us tips as to how long practice is going that day, etc (it varies, as do the start times). One of the other ones is on our case constantly and is pretty mean. The new GM has been very friendly and often will come over and talk with us on his way into the facility. Some of the players have been nasty, but that could happen anywhere. Steve Smith is notoriously ugly to fans- even ones that are clearly not there for autographs- and some have asked for our eBay information and accused us of selling them (ironically enough, these are often the backups that only real fans want anyways). Overall, I have managed to get pretty much every Panther- at least the ones that I wanted to get- at least once for my collection (I don’t sell). Knocked almost the entire team out the first time I went and have now gotten to know some of the players on a more personal level- garnering gloves used in practice (including the Panthers logo gloves, which were a huge get for me) and two pairs of cleats (one pair that I think, but can’t be positive on, was game used). You can also get some unexpected people that are there to watch practice (commentators, such as Tony Siragusa, sometimes show up the Friday/Saturday before home games and occasionally other local athletes show up- Steph Curry came last year before he went back to San Francisco as did one of the US Olympic Gold Medalists, Ricky Berens). Not sure how other locations are since this one is pretty easy to access and doesn’t have a lot of private property to restrict us, but it has been a much better experience than trying to go to training camp.

  4. Trey says:

Matt, great site! I wanted to know how do you find out where the visiting team hotels are when they come to town? Thanks

    • Matt Raymond says:

Hi Trey, I get this question a lot and I subscribe to the theory that it’s better to teach a man how to fish than to just hand over the seafood. I’ll say this – hotel info tends to pass by word of mouth and the best way to connect with other graphers is to be active out there in the field and I’m sure you’ll find people who are willing to help. Teams tend to stay at the same hotel each time they come in, so once you find out where they are staying you’re in good shape.

      Matt

  5. Jacob says:

First off I just want to thank you for putting this site together. It has been very useful as my collection of autographs continues to grow. Second, I know the hotel where the visiting team playing my hometown football team stays. What time do you recommend arriving at the hotel before the team departs for a 1 o’clock game? Also, where do I have the best chance at obtaining the most autographs – should I wait in the lobby, outside of the hotel, or in the parking lot?
